Inclusive Liveable Community

A quarter of our electorate have access and equity issues

Access for everyone

One in Four

One in four people in our electorate identify with having a disability. Higher than most other areas. So why is access and equity NEVER on the agenda? NEVER! There is extremely limited local information to support our community who manage their lives around limited access and equity. Except for the local Accessibility Capricornia group, which the local member has never been active in, and the other major party candidates don’t know exists.

Their family & carers

If one in four identify, that means their family and carers are limited in their ability to provide the best available quality of life due to the incredibly limited resources, services and facilities locally.

Public Facilities

Our community lacks vital accessible public facilities for locals and visitors. Many of you would comment there are disabled toilets everywhere. But are they accessible? Many are “up to code” yet outdated code doesn’t mean they meet the needs of a significant number of our community.

Other issues faced by our community include covered accessible safe parking close to where they need to be. Identifying not easily traversed footpaths, crossings and gutters needs to be a priority. Even access to shops and venues is a challenge, including new venues like the redeveloped beachfront sailing club, which is an appalling oversight that should be addressed immediately.

Our electorate needs to assess, create, and roll out a strategy that is completely accessible and inclusive.
